University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka

The University of Kelaniya signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Aukana Raja Maha Viharaya (temple), Anuradapuraya with the objective of organizing a reforestation and a forest maintenance programme in the forest areas of the land which belong to the temple. This MOU was signed by Senior Professor Sunanda Madduma Bandara, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya and the Chief Incumbent of the Aukana Raja Maha Viharaya, Venerable Shasthrawelliye Dammakiththi Thero on 11 th October 2016 at the Vice Chancellor’s office, University of Kelaniya. The purpose of this MOU is to develop mutually beneficial programs, projects and activities related to reforestation, habitat enrichment and forest maintenance in lands belonging to Aukana Raja Maha Viharaya and this program would provide the university an opportunity to exhibit expertise in forest and wildlife management while the reforested area and the existing forest would provide field laboratory facilities for the students who conduct research and follow degree programmes at the University. Prof. A.H.M.H. Abayarathna, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr. Mangala Ganehiarachchi, Head, Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, Dr. U.P.K. Epa, Chairman, Green Practices Committee, President and members of Dayaka Sabha of Aukana Raja Maha Viharaya graced the occasion.
